Finding good information about what self hypnosis is a difficult task because there are so many sites that contain mis-information about what hypnosis is and what it can be used for. This often frightens people away from an extremely useful therapeutic tool that can be very effective for helping with stress.
This series of articles which is based on current scientific evidence will help you to understand what hypnosis is, how you can induce it, and what you can use it for. To gain maximum benefit from this short course I recommend you practice the exercises in the order that they are presented.
First of all it is essential that you have a clear understanding of what hypnosis, or trance, actually is. Here is a short definition:
Hypnosis is the deliberate use of the imagination, paralleled with strong focus.
Done well, it can work in the same way as when you are dreaming – recent research has shown a strong connection between hypnosis and REM sleep. Since this site promotes the use of regular relaxation, we will also be using quite a large amount of this with the hypnosis.
Why use hypnosis?
Hypnosis is one of the most useful skills to learn if you need to relax regularly. Because hypnosis is natural, anyone can learn to use it to relax and gain benefits such as reducing stress, enhancing creativity, aiding learning as well as many other benefits. Hypnosis can be used any time you have a quiet moment to yourself, without any special apparatus – at home, at work or even at play!
If you haven't had much experience with hypnosis, I'm sure that you will be pleasantly surprised about the levels of relaxation that you will be able to achieve as you go through this short course.
So how do you start to create a hypnotic experience?
Just like the focus that you can have when reading a book, you will need to build an inner focus on an idea or picture in your imagination. You will almost certainly already have a certain ability to do this already – all you need to start with is to think of a relaxing time. This could be a holiday, or simply the last time you were enjoying your friends company.
To develop this into something that we can use as part of a hypnotic experience you need to practice describing relaxing experiences in great detail using all of the senses (touch, sound, taste, smell), making it as real as you can.
Exercise one
Describe in as much detail as you can a real or imagined (or mixed of both) a time when you felt very relaxed.
Example
I am sitting outside of a café in southern Italy eating green pistachio ice cream with a few friends – we are all under a parasol. There is a very slight sea breeze that I can feel on my face. The sun is shining, melting the ice cream, so I am having to eat it quickly. As I look out onto the sea I can see a few fishing boats on their way in to land. The sky is blue, and I can see the odd bird flying by. The beach that is in between us and the sea is busy with people sunbathing, couples walking hand in hand, and children laughing and screaming whilst they play. Time itself seems to take on a different meaning relaxing here watching the world go by...
At this point there is no need to be hypnotic. This exercise is purely to get a framework that we can base a hypnotic induction on later, and also to get you to think about using as many different senses in different ways. On page two of this self hypnosis tutorial you will learn how to start making your script hypnotic.
